Vector Shift — Handoff for Whisperling#

Session of 18 September 2026 • Prepared by Claude for Briana and Whisperling

In this session Briana began laying the world foundations for the future book Lives Across the Line. The story is intended to be acted out by AI tasks. All work was recorded as new files only, following Briana's instruction not to edit pre-existing files. As a result, some of today's files supersede others; the reading order below resolves this.

Canon approved today#

Topic Decision Source file
Planet A planet in the Andromeda galaxy; not Earth. The capital calls it Selenne; the frontier calls it Kethra. The name a speaker uses marks the speaker's community. Planet Naming Decision; Planet Naming Resolution — Selenne (settles the spelling)
Star system Binary. Kethra orbits one star; the companion lies far outside Kethra's orbit ("Option B"). Kethra Star System DRAFT v2 (Status section)
Primary star G-class, yellow-white, like our Sun. Capital name Theia, frontier name Sól. Star Naming Decision; Star System v2
Companion star A red giant, red-orange ("more red"). Capital name Hyperion, frontier name Surtr. Star Naming Decision; Star System v2
Earth heritage Humanity descends from Earth. No one knows where Earth is; it survives only as myth. Earth Heritage Decision
Earth's mythic name Earth-of-the-songs (replaces "Earth that was") Earth Heritage Phrase — Earth-of-the-songs
Naming rule Names echo; they do not dictate design. Naming Principles (Principle 1)
Mixing rule Borrow motifs from anywhere, but never take a name and its design from the same source. Naming Principles Addendum — Mixing Sources

Superseded or withdrawn (keep for the record; do not follow)#

  • "Solenne": withdrawn. The capital name is Selenne. (Planet Naming Correction — Solenne)
  • Star System DRAFT v1: superseded by v2. v1 assumed a small, distant companion, not a giant.
  • "Earth that was": replaced by Earth-of-the-songs. The phrase also overlaps with Firefly.

Main proposals awaiting Briana (not canon)#

From Star System v2 (companion about 3,600 K, about 1.2 solar masses, orbit 150–450 AU, about 3,500 years):

  • The red giant appears as a visible disk about a third the width of the sun. It brings red nights for part of each year: about 400 lux at closest approach and about 50 lux at the farthest point.
  • Hot eras occur at each close pass, when the giant adds about 1.3% to Kethra's heat.
  • A compact inner system with one gas giant.
  • The Cinderbelt is a rubble belt at the system's edge, kept from forming a planet by the companion's gravity.
  • Any worlds around the companion were scorched when it swelled into a giant.
  • Calendars differ between the capital and the frontier.
  • Cultural readings of the star names: the capital sees Hyperion as a watching father; the frontier sees Surtr as the fire at the world's end.
  • Song-keepers as a possible institution arising from Earth-of-the-songs.

Still open (Briana's decisions)#

  1. Kethra's day length, year length, axial tilt and seasons.
  2. Kethra's moons and their names in both traditions. Note: Selenne echoes Selene, the Greek moon goddess.
  3. How and when humans reached Andromeda, and why the way back was lost.
  4. Where in the giant's 3,500-year cycle the story takes place.
  5. From earlier conversation, unanswered: whether the story is steered by beats Briana sets or left to pure emergence; and whose lives, on which side of which line, the book follows.

Session context worth knowing#

  • Briana asked that "case against" arguments be left out of creative choices for this game setting. She called them hypothetical and "a fallacy" in this context.
  • Name checks against existing fiction were done for every approved name. The overlaps were reported: Kethra (Warhammer 40,000), Hyperion (Dan Simmons), "Earth-That-Was" (Firefly).
  • Two numerical errors made in conversation were corrected in writing: the companion's orbit (first "decades", now about 3,500 years) and the night brightness, originally overstated because infrared was counted as visible light. See the corrections section in Star System v2.
