The Definitive Colony Almanac: Kronos (Ymir) and Hearthport#

Kethra Almanac • Approved 19 September 2026 • drafted 18 September 2026 • A colony of stations, bases and moons, told as a country

Status: approved. Briana approved the whole almanac on 19 September 2026 (the Almanac Approval Decision). Where this file calls something a proposal, read it as approved, except the open points that decision lists.

Status before approval.

Canon, decided by Briana:

  • Kronos/Ymir has 15 moons.
  • The Vardane Imperium seized the Kronos moons from the Cinderbelt Coalition.

See the Kronos Moons and Cinderbelt Operations record.

Proposal: everything else, built on the spine and on Kronos and the Cinderbelt.

What this almanac covers. The Kronos colony is not a country. It is a collection of stations, bases and moons, held by one power and lived in mostly by another. Its heart is Hearthport, on the moon Hestia. There, about 228,000 Coalition crews live under Vardane occupation. Every station on every moon is represented here and in the Atlas.

Section 1: Overview & Identity#

Name & Etymology#

The name depends on who is speaking:

Speaker The colony The station The moon
Residents (Coalition crews) "Kronos", "the Fuel" Hearthport, or "the Hearth" Hestia
The Imperium The Kronos Holding Hestia Holding Hestia
The frontier "Ymir" Hearthport Auðumbla
The capital "Kronos" Hearthport Hestia

Where the names come from.

  • Hearthport was named in AL 2102 by the Coalition's first crews, after Hestia, goddess of the hearth: "a hearth at the edge of the dark".
  • Hestia Holding is the Imperium's name, given in AL 2284, using its word for a province.
  • In Hearthport today, saying "Hestia Holding" out loud marks you as an occupier or a collaborator.

Symbols#

Symbol Description Status in Hearthport today
The Hearth-lamp A flame over a ring, in white on bronze. The Coalition station badge from AL 2102 to 2284. Banned. It is drawn in dust on windows, scratched into lockers and stitched inside collars. It is the resistance's symbol without being anyone's flag.
The Rings The Vardane Imperium's flag Flies over the Office of Protection and the gun-domes
The protection band A white armband that "residents under protection" must wear in public Worn by every resident. Vardane citizens wear their rank-collars instead.
Residents' motto "Keep it lit." Said as a greeting, and as a farewell
The Hearth Song A shift-change work song from the founding years Not banned, because the Imperium doesn't understand the verses

Colony Profile#

Seat Hearthport, on Hestia, the fourth large moon
Population about 400,000 at Kronos in all. About 280,000 at Hearthport. About 89% live under Vardane administration.
Governed by The Office of Protection under the Protector of Hestia, Mathis Adrel, appointed by the Imperator. It is a Vardane overseas holding.
Residents' body The Hearth Council: the old Coalition station council. It survives as a tolerated advisory body.
Languages Beltspeech (residents), Orethi (Imperial). Honorifics are required when a resident addresses Imperial staff.
Currency The Imperial mark, officially. Hearth chits, the old Coalition scrip, circulate illegally and are trusted more.
Time Vardenhold time is imposed. The residents keep Hearth time, the old Coalition shift clock, and everyone knows both.
Distance from Kethra 34–52 light-minutes. 1–3 weeks by torch-ship.

Chronological Timeline#

AL Event
2102 The Cinderbelt Coalition's Kronos Fuel Authority founds Hearthport on Hestia. The first crew is 1,400 people. (The Coalition was then still called the Outer Works Coalition; it took the Cinderbelt's name in 2171. See the Cinderbelt Coalition almanac.)
2104 The Vesper Orbital Compact agrees to carry Kronos fuel to Kethra
2110 The first skimmer dive into Kronos's atmosphere
2118 Demeter's fuel refineries open
2129 The Spin-Halls are completed, after the first Hearthborn children show severe bone loss
2150s Growth years. Kronos fuel powers the fusion boom on Kethra.
2166 Deepwell is founded on Hera by the Ilyr Sanctum under an Assembly science charter
2200 Hearthport's population reaches 150,000
2233 Vesper Fever reaches Hearthport through a fuel tender: 3,100 dead
2284 The Taking of Hearthport. A Vardane naval force takes the Kronos moons from the Coalition in a single operation. 212 residents and 64 Coalition station guards are killed.
2284–2286 The Hard Years. Curfew and the protection band. Most Coalition officials are deported to the belt.
2286 The Hearth Council is allowed to meet again, as an advisory body
2291 The Armistice of Saltline. The fuel clauses leave Kronos with the Imperium. Assembly Fuel Monitors arrive at Demeter and Hearthport.
2296 The Cold Strike. Residents stop work across the fuel yards for 19 days. It is broken by cutting heat to the Lower Warrens. 41 people die of cold.
2305 The Holdfast "understanding": the Coalition holdout on Kronos X is tolerated
2314 The present. Fuel flows. Nobody at Hearthport calls it peace.

The Giant and Its Moons#

Kronos is a gas giant of roughly Jupiter's mass, 5.2 AU from Theia. Sunlight there is about 4% of what Earth receives. Its fifteen moons are described moon by moon in Kronos and the Cinderbelt. In summary:

Moon Holder People Role in the colony
Hestia / Auðumbla (IV) Vardane (occupied) about 280,000 Hearthport, the colony's home
Demeter / Bergelmir (III) Vardane about 60,000 The Skimmer Wing and the fuel refineries; the Assembly Fuel Monitors
Hera / Hvergelmir (II) Ilyr Sanctum about 9,000 Deepwell, the research enclave over the hidden ocean
Hades / Múspell (I) Vardane about 2,000 Sulphur and metals, worked by machines and Bonded rotations
Tollgate (VIII), Lockyard (IX), Glint (V) Vardane about 14,000 Customs, the naval anchorage, the sensor picket
Holdfast (X) Cinderbelt Coalition about 11,000 The holdout
Dimlight (XI) Outer Lantern League about 6,000 A hidden repair yard
Echo (XII) Vesper Orbital Compact about 4,000 Relay and traffic control
Quiet (XIII) Caldren Crown about 900 A "science station" that is really a listening post
Muster (XIV) Free Banner Guild about 13,000 Mercenary staging
Unlisted (XV) rumoured Black Ledger unknown
Chaff (VI), Grit (VII) Unheld none Rubble in the radiation belts

Working: 280,000 + 60,000 + 9,000 + 2,000 + 14,000 + 11,000 + 6,000 + 4,000 + 900 + 13,000 ≈ 400,000. Unlisted's people, if any, are not counted.

Hestia, the Hearth Moon#

Size radius about 2,300 km
Surface gravity about 0.12 g, less than half the Cinderbelt's 0.3 g
Day Hestia keeps one face toward Kronos. Its day equals its orbit: 16.9 Earth days, of which about 8 days are light and 8 dark.
The sky Kronos hangs fixed above the Kronos-facing hemisphere, where Hearthport is: a banded disc many times wider than Theia. Theia is a small, brilliant sun that gives only 4% of Earth's light. Once per orbit, Kronos eclipses Theia for about 3 hours ("the Dark Hour").
Surface Old, dark, cratered ice and rock at about −170 °C. The crust shields against the radiation.
Radiation Low, outside Kronos's worst belts. That is why Hearthport is here.

Hearthport, Level by Level#

Upper level Upper Warrens, the oldest housing. The Office of Protection, the old Coalition administration taken over. The Garrison Ring, with its armoury and frames. Residents; Imperial staff; the garrison
Middle level The Hearth: the great hall under the ice, with markets, and where the Hearth Council meets. The Fuel Yards and Tenders, where fuel is staged for Kethra and the Assembly Fuel Monitors keep watch. Shared
Lower level The Farm Decks (hydroponics and vat kitchens); the Spin-Halls, rotating halls at 0.8 g where every child exercises daily; the Lower Warrens, crowded newer housing Residents
The deep The Reactor and Ice-Melt Plant: fusion power, water and air Resident engineers, under Imperial guard

Natural Resources#

Resource Where Notes
Helium-3 and deuterium Kronos's atmosphere, harvested by skimmers The reason the colony exists
Water ice Hestia and Demeter Water, air, reaction mass
Rock and metals Hestia, Hades Construction; sulphur from Hades
The hidden ocean Hera Whether it holds life is open. Deepwell studies it.

Section 3: History & Chronology#

The Coalition Years, AL 2102–2284#

Hearthport was a Coalition company town that became a society.

  • The first crews came up from Kethra's orbital yards: Upwellers and surface volunteers, used to spin-habitats and hard work. (Corrected 18 September 2026: an earlier draft called them belt-born, but the belt was not settled until AL 2140, per the spine and Chapter I.) When the Coalition pushed on to the Cinderbelt in 2140, Hearthport's veterans went with it, and later Hearthport crews were Cinderborn.
  • At Kronos the delay to Kethra was under an hour, and the fuel was needed by everyone. Hearthport was rich, for a belt town.
  • The first Hearthborn children showed severe bone loss, and the Spin-Halls were built in AL 2129. Hearthborn people, born at 0.12 g, cannot live at Kethra's gravity, and struggle even at the belt's 0.3 g. They are the most home-bound people in the system.

The Taking, AL 2284#

During the Corridor War (the Imperium calls it the Transit War), a Vardane naval force from Hesk High and the Void Squadron seized the Kronos moons in one operation.

  • Tollgate was taken first, then Demeter's skimmer fleet, then Hearthport itself.
  • The Coalition's station guard fought for eleven hours. 212 residents and 64 guards died.
  • The aim, as the Crown's almanac records, was to cut the Crown's fusion fuel. The Crown rationed power for six years.

The Occupation, AL 2284–2314#

Period What happened
The Hard Years, 2284–2286 Curfew; the protection band; deportation of Coalition officials to the belt; arms seized; the Hearth-lamp banned
Tolerance, 2286–2296 The Hearth Council readmitted as advisory. Work resumed because the fuel had to flow, and the Imperium needed the residents' skills.
The Armistice, 2291 The fuel clauses made the occupation part of the peace. The Crown gets its fuel, the Imperium keeps the moons, and the residents get Assembly Fuel Monitors, who watch the fuel, not the people.
The Cold Strike, 2296 19 days; broken by cutting heat to the Lower Warrens; 41 dead of cold. The residents' great grievance.
The understanding, 2305–2314 Holdfast tolerated. Smuggling through Dimlight. The Crown's listening post, Quiet, watches. Nothing is resolved.

Rulers and Leaders#

Warden Term
Ines Garrow 2102–2111
Tobias Ren 2111–2124
Halle Morrow 2124–2139
Pim Adeyo 2139–2158

Protectors of Hestia (Vardane, AL 2284–)#

Protector Term Notes
Captain-Marshal Ulrec Tarsk 2284–2291 Commanded the Taking. Governed the Hard Years.
Protector Hanne Castrel 2291–2302 Governed under the Armistice. Ordered the heat cut in the Cold Strike.
Protector Mathis Adrel 2302– Pragmatic, of the Ledgers current: "fuel first". Trusted by no one, and therefore effective.

The Hearth Council#

21 members, chosen by the residents' own shift-lists: in effect, elected in secret and announced in public. The current Hearth Speaker is Ada Morrow-Kell, a great-granddaughter of Warden Halle Morrow.

Section 4: Demographics & Society#

Bar chart of the people at Kronos: Hearthport Coalition residents 228 thousand, Vardane officials and garrison 38 thousand, others 14 thousand, Demeter 60 thousand, Imperial small moons 14 thousand, Deepwell 9 thousand, Hades 2 thousand, free and holdout moons 35 thousand
Who lives at Kronos, in thousands.

Population#

Group Number Notes
Coalition residents ("residents under protection") about 228,000 Neither citizens nor Bonded: a legal category invented in AL 2284
Vardane officials, garrison and families about 38,000 at Hearthport, plus Demeter, Hades and the small moons Rank-collars. Most rotate home every three Kethran years.
Others at Hearthport about 14,000 Vesper staff, contract engineers, traders
Hearthborn (born at Kronos) about 41% of residents Cannot live on Kethra; struggle at 0.3 g
Free and holdout moons about 35,000 Holdfast, Dimlight, Echo, Quiet, Muster
Deepwell (Ilyr) about 9,000

Health#

Metric Value
Life expectancy (residents) 64 K-yr
The Hearthborn body Tall and light-boned. Daily Spin-Hall exercise from infancy is required, and skipping it is a family scandal.
The Hollows (see Chapter I) Less severe than in the belt, because Kethra is under an hour away by signal. Worse since the Taking.
Cold sickness Chronic illness in Lower Warrens survivors of the Cold Strike
Care The old Coalition Hearth Infirmary, run by residents and supplied under Imperial licence

Language and Belief#

  • Beltspeech: compressed and abbreviated. Hearthport has its own slang:
    • "lit" means fine, or safe;
    • "cold" means dangerous, or Imperial;
    • "band" means an informer.
  • Orethi, with honorifics, is required when speaking upward to Imperial staff.
  • Belief:
    • the Cantorate, about 30%;
    • Plain Reckoners, about 35%. Engineers' culture.
    • the Wolf Rite, about 6%;
    • the Hearth vigil, a secular custom of keeping one light always burning in every home. It is practised by nearly everyone, and it is not quite legal.

Education#

  • The Hearth School is the old Coalition school, now under Imperial curriculum. Orethi honorifics are taught. The Hearth Song is taught at home.
  • The Void College, Hesk accepts a few resident students each year. Going means leaving the Hearth, and some never come back.

Section 5: Government, Law & Politics#

How the Colony Is Ruled#

Body Power
The Protector of Hestia Appointed by the Imperator. Commands the colony, answers to Vardenhold.
The Office of Protection Administration, rationing, permits and the fuel yards
Kronos Military Command About 9,000 troops: the Garrison Ring, Tollgate, Lockyard, and the Void Squadron detachment
The Hearth Council Advisory. It speaks for the residents, negotiates rations and shift terms, and is heard when the Protector needs the fuel to flow.
Assembly Fuel Monitors Homeworld Assembly inspectors under the Armistice. They certify deliveries; they have no mandate over people.
Deepwell Governs itself under its Assembly charter. The Order of the Veiled Sun guards it.

The Law of Protection#

Rule What it means
Residents under protection No vote, no collar, no bond. Exit permits are required to leave Kronos, and are rarely given to skilled crews.
The protection band A white armband, required in public
Curfew During the Dark Hour, when Kronos eclipses Theia, and at Imperial holidays
The Hearth-lamp Its display is banned
Courts Imperial tribunals for "security"; the Hearth Council's arbitration for disputes between residents. The Office tolerates it, because it keeps residents out of Imperial courts.
Punishment Detention in the Garrison Ring, deportation to the belt, or transfer to Hades rotations, the most feared sentence

Foreign Relations of a Colony That Has None#

Party Its stake in Kronos
Cinderbelt Coalition Wants Hearthport back. Holds Holdfast. Its councillor Joss Tenner, the last Warden, keeps the demand alive.
Caldren Crown Wants its fuel safe. Watches from Quiet. Officially accepts the fuel clauses; privately funds nothing, and forgets nothing.
Vesper Orbital Compact Carries the fuel and runs Echo. Hears everything that passes through its relays.
Outer Lantern League Runs Dimlight. Smuggles people out and chits in.
Ilyr Sanctum Deepwell. Neutral, surrounded, and careful.
Free Banner Guild Muster: escorts for whoever pays, including, sometimes, the Imperium
Black Ledger Unlisted, if it exists

Section 6: Economy & Infrastructure#

The Fuel#

Output About 45 tonnes of helium-3 a year, plus deuterium. (Proposal: enough for all of Kethra's fusion power, with about 10 tonnes going to the Crown.)
The Skimmer Wing (Demeter) About 140 skimmers diving into Kronos's upper atmosphere on rotation
The route Demeter refineries → Hearthport fuel yards → Vesper tenders → Kethra orbit → the Line spaceports → fusion plants
Who earns The Imperial Fuel Authority (Tarsk family) sells under the fuel clauses. Residents are paid Imperial wages at a "protection rate", about 60% of the Coalition rate before AL 2284.

Money#

  • Imperial marks are official.
  • Hearth chits, the old Coalition scrip, are illegal, and trusted. They trade at about 1.4 marks.
  • Barter covers the rest: air-filter credits, spin-hall hours, water rights.

Infrastructure#

System Notes
Docks The surface docks at Hearthport; Tollgate customs; the Lockyard anchorage
Power A fusion reactor in the deep, running on its own fuel
Water and air The ice-melt plant: Hestia's crust is the colony's reservoir
Food Farm decks and vat kitchens: about 70% local, the rest shipped from Kethra and the belt
Communications Through Echo, the Vesper relay, and the Imperial relay: 34–52 minutes to Kethra, about 7 hours to the belt

Section 7: Culture & Daily Life#

Holidays#

Day Whose What
Founding Day Residents The first crew's landing, AL 2102. Kept quietly, with the Hearth Song and bread from the farm decks.
Lamp Night Residents Unofficial. The anniversary of the Taking. Every home keeps a lamp in the window. The Office pretends not to see.
Moons Day Imperial The Taking celebrated as a victory. Parades in the Garrison Ring. Residents stay home.
The Day of the Hand Imperial Kept by the garrison. Residents are respectful about this one.
Dark Hour vigil Everyone Each eclipse of Theia: stillness, a lamp, and curfew.

Food#

Vat protein, farm-deck greens, ice-melt tea, hearth loaf from the farm decks, and on feast days honey shipped from Kethra at ruinous prices.

  • Imperial officers eat shipped beef.
  • Residents eat vat stew, and joke about it: "Oreth feeds the planet, and the planet sends us soup."

Arts#

  • Hull songs: shift-change songs, dense with Beltspeech double meanings. The Imperium doesn't understand the verses.
  • Warren murals, painted over every year and repainted every year.
  • Lamp-craft: tiny lamps made of scrap, the resistance's folk art.

Sport#

  • Vault ball: played in the Hearth's great hall at 0.12 g, where one leap crosses the court.
  • Spin-hall races: children's running races at 0.8 g.

Manners#

Custom Meaning
"Keep it lit" Hello, and goodbye
Never say "Hestia Holding" among residents It marks an occupier or a collaborator
Never touch another's band The protection band is humiliation and solidarity at once
Imperial officers who say "Hearthport" Quietly respected. Some are reported by their own side for it.
Water is never wasted, and never refused

Guidance for AI actors#

  • Residents say "Hearthport". Imperial staff say "Hestia Holding". A switch in either direction is a scene.
  • Hearthborn characters can't go to Kethra, and barely to the belt. Kronos is the only home they can survive in.
  • The Dark Hour, every 16.9 days, is curfew, vigil, and cover.
  • Lamp Night, the Cold Strike and the Hearth-lamp are live wounds. Use them with weight.
  • Whether Hera's ocean holds life is open. Don't settle it.
