Status: approved. Briana approved the whole almanac on 19 September 2026 (the Almanac Approval Decision). Where this file calls something a proposal, read it as approved, except the open points that decision lists.
Status before approval: The Caldren Crown is an approved faction name. Its placement on Kethra, and everything below, is a proposal built on the spine. Figures are for AL 2314 and in Kethran years unless noted.
Section 1: National Overview & Identity#
Official Name & Etymology#
- Formal name: The Crown and Charter of Caldren
- Short name: the Caldren Crown, or simply the Crown
- Adjective: Caldren (a Caldren court, Caldren crowns). People: Caldrenfolk; in formal use, subjects of the Crown.
Where the name comes from. From Lake Caldren, the deep caldera lake in Highcairn. During the Silence, a group of families survived in the high lake country, calling themselves the Caldera folk. In the Kindling they came down the Thess as traders and war-leaders. The name travelled with them and wore down to Caldren.
In about AL 790, the lords of the lower Thess, several of them of Caldera descent, took the name for the realm they were building. The Charter of AL 812 made it formal.
Legend. In legend, the first crown was forged of Highcairn copper and quenched in Lake Caldren, so the realm and the lake share one name. The Royal Academy calls this a pretty story attached to a true etymology.
What the frontier calls it. Southspeech calls the Crown "the Stair", meaning the capital's terraces, and by extension northern authority. "The Stair wants its rent" means the charter-warden is coming.

Seasonal hazards:
- Double-spring floods and storm surges on the coast (Long Gate closures).
- Longstorms in autumn in the north.
- Snow and blizzards in Ashcombe.
- The Thess Bore.
- Late frosts in Riverwend.
Long-term trend:
- Mean temperature has risen about 0.4 °C since AL 2200.
- Sea level has risen about 0.35 m since AL 2200, and the rate is accelerating.
- Long Gate closures have gone from 22 a year (AL 2250) to about 40 (AL 2314).
Flora & Fauna#
- Native wildlife: shalebacks on the Ashcombe steppe; reedlurkers in Lowfen; tidehounds on the Saltreach flats; gloamwings everywhere in the red season; glassmoths in the Corran Duskwood.
- Endemic species, found nowhere else on Kethra:
- The Caldera char: an Earth trout line stocked in Lake Caldren in AL 1140, which has since diverged into a distinct deep-water form. The most famous Earthkin animal to have changed on Kethra.
- The Corran glassmoth: a large native glassmoth found only in the high Duskwood.
- Highcairn blackthatch: a slow, cold-adapted variety that does not creep.
- Earthkin preserves: The Founders' Orchard at Landfall keeps living trees grown from the original seed-stock of the three ships. The Royal Seed Vault at Hollin is the Crown's master seed bank.

The Seeding Limits Bill now before the Hall would make the boundary of the Corran Wild permanent and cap net new seeding in the Crown. It is the Living Worlds Movement's central demand and the Charter Party's most divisive question.

Section 3: History & Chronology#
Pre-Colonial & Ancient Eras#
No humans lived on Kethra before Landfall. It has no indigenous human civilisations, and nothing that lived here before Landfall shows any sign of having been a people. The Crown's "ancient" history therefore begins with the Founding.

Founding & Sovereignty#
How the Crown came to be:
- Lordships, about AL 650–790. Kindling-era lords on the lower Thess built power on seeded estates and on the right to keep the local song-registers.
- Taking the name, about AL 790. The strongest of them, Aurel of the Terraces, united the lower Thess under the name Caldren, from the Caldera folk of Highcairn.
- The Charter of Caldren, AL 812. Aurel was crowned at Landfall. The Charter bound the Crown to "keep the song and the law", created the first 48 Chartered Houses, and granted the Cantorate the keeping of the Register. The Crown dates its sovereignty from the Charter.
- Expansion, AL 812–1400. Up the Thess, over the Corran, into Ashcombe and Northmere, through marriage, war and seeding charters. More Houses were chartered as the realm grew, and a few have been added since. There are 96 today, nine of them created after AL 1900.
- The Great Charter, AL 1733. It turned the Crown into a constitutional monarchy under Parliament. The Crown sees this, not a war of independence, as the founding of the modern state.
- The Homeworld Assembly, AL 2150. The Crown pooled part of its sovereignty in the Assembly after the Iron Winter, and it hosts the Assembly in Aletheia.

Worse came from the phosphate cut. After three years, Crown harvests failed, and the Lean Years (AL 2285–2290) brought about 2.4 million excess deaths in the Crown before emergency grain reserves and Rovessa shipments from the Holds ended the famine. Births collapsed, and about 1.6 million people left for the south or the Lesser Crowns. Corin IV died in AL 2289 (of illness, not in battle), and Elisande II was crowned at 31 with the war still being fought. The Armistice of Saltline (AL 2291): mutual inspections, guaranteed phosphate deliveries, the fuel clauses (Vardane keeps the Kronos moons but guarantees fuel at a fixed price, under Assembly monitors), and the corridor question left open. |
